One of the illustrious lot of jazz greats bred by Philadelphia, drummer Bobby Durham (1937-2008) was the accompanist of choice for the cream of musicians and singers in jazz and beyond. After establishing himself with doo-wop groups and military bands in the late 1950s, Durham made the rounds with leaders diverse as Grant Green, Count Basie, Charles Earland, and R&B singer Lloyd Price. His highest-profile steady gigs were with jazz vocal legend Ella Fitzgerald and pianist Oscar Peterson, plus finding time for session work with Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, and Marvin Gaye. In Europe, where he resided part-time, he had a parallel career as a singer.
