Led by guitarist/singer Tue Madsen, Danish extreme metal band Grope chose their name from a friend’s suggestion of a moniker with deliberately ‘cheap’ connotations. Although primarily rooted in the death rock tradition, the group’s eclecticism was immediately apparent - a quality that was at least partially engendered by Madsen’s 10 years working in a record store. As well as recording a cover version of Björk’s ‘Army Of Me’ in 1995, they also appeared on tribute albums to both Metallica and Slayer. With influences ranging from the hardcore punk scene to traditional metal bands such as Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, the band made a bright impression with the release of Primates in 1995. Popular throughout mainland European circles despite a lack of promotional leverage, it was quickly followed by The Fury. This record’s high intensity levels and volume provoked immediate comparisons with Machine Head, which Grope took as a compliment. They continued releasing records into the new millennium, setting up their own label for 2002’s If You Were My Dog.
