b. Ian James Walker, 27 April 1948, Govanhill, Glasgow, Scotland. Walker started playing and singing during the early 60s in the Glasgow Folk Centre, but took a break from performing until 1975. In the late 70s, he started writing and appearing at folk festivals, but it was 1985 before he released Roses In December. Nevertheless, from playing clubs and festivals he started to build up a following, and Flying High, released on Fellside Records, was voted winner in the Folk and Country Music category by the UK Music Retailers Association. The album contains some excellent songs, such as the title track, an anti-war song, which was inspired by the Falklands conflict. Others, including ‘Hawks And Eagles Fly Like Doves’, have been sung and recorded by the McCalmans and Dick Gaughan, and ‘Sing Me A Song Mr Bloom’ by the Yetties and Bram Taylor. Since 1988, in addition to solo appearances, Walker has worked with fellow Glaswegian songwriter, Ian Bruce. In 1993 Walker recorded with the traditional group Sétanta. The line-up featured Colin McAllister (b. Eire; vocals), Mike Barry (b. Scotland; fiddle), Jack Bethel (b. Scotland; hammered dulcimer), Hunter McConnell (b. Scotland; guitar/vocals), and David Munro (b. Scotland; uillean pipes). A talented songwriter, with a subtle line in social comment, Walker’s talent deserves to be more widely known.
