Whether Jan Jelinek’s making music under his given name or pseudonyms such as Farben, Ursula Bogner, and G.E.S., the German musician’s deep dives into digital realms and fractal soundscapes have continually yielded compelling and inventive results. Born in Bad-Hersfeld in 1971, Jelinek came to Berlin to study sociology and philosophy before becoming immersed in the city’s electronic music scene and releasing his first EPs under the guise of Gramm. On early albums like 2001’s Loop-Finding-Jazz-Records—Jelinek’s first under his own name—he crafted a mesmerizing brand of minimal techno by manipulating and processing samples he originally found through jazz albums, field recordings, and other sources. Jelinek demonstrates his eagerness to create new forms and fresh surprises on albums like 2005’s Kosmischer Pitch, a synthesis of modern electronic music and ‘70s German experimental rock, and 2019’s Puls-Plus-Puls, a thrilling collaboration with percussionist Sven-Ǻke Johansson.
