In the artist’s words:
Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail. As a kid I’d skip school to browse cassette tapes at the library, where I discovered Alan Lomax’s raw field recordings of folk blues & gospel. Unlike polished ’80s chart hits, they introduced me to early American greats like Leadbelly & Muddy Waters.
What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular? J.J. Cale, Naturally Kyuss, Welcome to Sky Valley Snooks Eaglin, New Orleans Street Singer JJ Cale’s Naturally nails his lean, Tulsa sound—jazz, blues, country, rock. Snooks Eaglin’s acoustic street songs inspire with style-spanning covers. Kyuss’s Sky Valley blends folk, Sabbath, and Shankar into slow, heavy, desert-born riffs.
Find a song of yours on Apple Music that you love and tell us what makes it special. Tell us why you chose this song. “Winter Coat (Live)” This song connects with so many people and because I thoroughly enjoyed working out the guitar and vocal Harmony parts with my band at the time.
What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far? In 2007 I played Glastonbury’s Acoustic and Avalon stages. Recently, I opened for Bonnie Raitt and recorded at Nashville’s legendary Southern Ground Studios with my friend Daniel Kimbro—both unforgettable experiences.
Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band? There are countless musicians I’ve yet to meet and collaborate with. I look forward to discovering them—and I’d especially love to play a tune with Taj Mahal, whose voice is deeply expressive and honest.
