A trumpeter, composer, and bandleader based in Manchester, England, Matthew Halsall's music draws from the modal and spiritual jazz inspiration of Alice and John Coltrane and Miles Davis. His debut, 2008's Sending My Love, was also the first release from his Gondwana label. In 2011 he released the Gilles Peterson Worldwide Award-winning On the Go (2011). In 2014, his composition "The Games We Played" appeared on vocalist Zara McFarlane's If You Knew Her. Later that year, with Gondwana Orchestra, he released When the World Was One and re-engaged them for 2015's Into Forever. In 2017, Halsall collaborated with American vocalist Dwight Trible on Inspirations, and 2019 saw the triple-length Oneness. 2020's Salute to the Sun was followed by a live recorded performance the next year. 2023's An Ever Changing View featured an 11-member cast that included flutist/saxophonist Chip Wickham and vocalist Caitlin Lang.
