Mary Halvorson is a guitarist, composer, and bandleader who melds deep jazz with indie rock, folk, modern classical music, and other traditions, and she possesses a signature guitar sound and a musical aesthetic that evolves with each album. After working with Anthony Braxton, she and violinist Jessica Pavone performed as a duo for 2005's Prairies. In 2015, she issued the solo guitar outing Meltframe. One of 2018's most acclaimed jazz releases, Mary Halvorson's Code Girl netted her the 2019 MacArthur Foundation Grant. In 2022, she issued Belladonna for jazz sextet and Amaryllis for solo guitar and Mivos Quartet. In 2024, her sextet issued Cloudward. February 2025's Bagatelles, Vol. 1 was originally issued in 2021 as part of a limited four-disc set of John Zorn's book of compositions, Bagatelles: Box 1. A month later, Halvorson appeared alongside pianist Sylvie Courvoisier on the set Bone Bells. She released About Ghosts in June.
