Few artists reflect the vibrant multiculturalism of Lisbon as lucidly as João Barbosa, aka Branko. As a key member of collective Buraka Som Sistema and founder of the Enchufada label, he’s long championed the dance music of Angola (kuduro) and other global cultures at the heart of his city. In his own music he continues to reimagine them into sleek and atmospheric beats. But as signalled by his debut album Atlas, Branko’s style can’t be pinned down to single territory: it takes cues from the scenes and sounds of Amsterdam, Cape Town, New York and beyond.
