As the lead presence in A Tribe Called Quest, Q-Tip's place as a golden era hip-hop icon is secured. But as the group disbanded in 1998, Tip's solo career took him in a different direction to Tribe's easy going vibes as he embraced more of a club-oriented sound for 1999's Amplified. That project's followup, 2008's The Renaissance, continued to keep it moving as this time the Queens-raised rapper tapped into a soulful production style that leaned on live instrumentation and included a collaboration with the singer Norah Jones.
