DeVaughn came up in the D.C. nightclub scene and was signed to Jive Records by DJ Jazzy Jeff in 2002. A creative self-promoter, he experimented with personas, among them "Chronkite" and the crown- and cape-wearing "Underground King." DeVaughn's music has been difficult to categorize but its skill and creativity has been embraced, with a Best R&B Album nomination at the 2011 GRAMMY® Awards.
