Yothu Yindi’s unusual arc began when the collective scored a surprise radio hit with a dance remix of their 1991 single “Treaty.” For an ensemble that sang openly about First Nations rights—thanks to leader Mandawuy Yunupingu and many other First Nations band members—such mainstream success was unprecedented in Australia. But there’s more to this musical story than a dance-floor fluke (and triple ARIA winner): 1992’s bluesy rock single “Tribal Voice” took cues from Midnight Oil to encourage people to stand up and fight for their rights, while 1993’s rousing “World Turning” tapped trip-hop beats and other soulful yet timely elements. Considering that Yothu Yindi formed in part to bridge cultural divides, it’s only fitting that Crowded House’s Neil Finn joined in for 1994’s “Dots on the Shell”—and that “Treaty” has enjoyed several reinterpretations with different collaborators in the decades since its release. Bringing First Nations language, music, and culture to the fore, Yothu Yindi inspired multiple generations of artists, whether it’s catchy rock bands like King Stingray or a globally successful graduate of the group in the late Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu.
