Pumping out backwoods boogie raucous enough to start a riot, Black Oak Arkansas are Southern rock's wild boys. They started in the early '70s, featuring three guitarists who howl like hounds, yet the star of the show is Jim “Dandy” Mangrum. The lewd and raspy screamer sounds like he chews nails and chugs motor oil on two of their biggest tunes: the speeding, hard-rock version of R&B standard “Jim Dandy” and the funk-spiked “Hot and Nasty,” which drops one of the era's dirtiest drum fills. The hellions also boast a freaky psychedelic edge, resulting in rattling voodoo-inspired acid rock like “When Electricity Came to Arkansas.”
