Montrealer Marie-Pierre Arthur started out singing and playing back-up for some of Canada's best acts—Karkwa, Galaxie, Ariane Moffatt, and Buck 65 among them. But since 2009, the Grande-Vallée, Québec-born artist has been honing her own bouncy French pop sound. Her gently hewn eponymous debut is packed with soulful melodies and jazzy melancholy, while later records, like the Louis-Jean Cormier-assisted Si l'aurore, balance upbeat pop with swelling ballads.
