Habiendo usado Chin Up como nombre original, Switchfoot se formó en 1996 y grabó su LP debut en 1997 The Legend of Chin, para re:Think. Le siguió New Way to Be Human dos años más tarde y fue un enorme éxito; gracias al tema que da nombre al disco ganaron en 1999 el Dove Award para la Canción del año. Learning to Breathe (2000) fue su primer lanzamiento en vender 500.000 copias.
