Everything Is Dangerous But Nothing's Surprising
Album - Alternative, Music
Despite being delayed by the pandemic for two years, Body Type’s debut album didn’t slow the Sydney band’s momentum in the least. Following two razor-sharp EPs, Everything Is Dangerous But Nothing’s Surprising confirms the quartet’s melody-driven take on post-punk and indie rock, which benefits from three different lead vocalists and songwriters. “I’ve got charm,” drawls guitarist Sophie McComish over and over on the especially snappy (and quite accurate) “The Charm,” while opener “A Line” sees guitarist Annabel Blackman chant in almost spoken-word monotone over dreamier layers. And bassist Georgia Wilkinson-Derums leads the churning drive of her tune “Buoyancy,” one of several songs here evoking Sleater-Kinney’s anxious guitar interplay. The lyrics are often every bit as pointed as those hooks: Observe the man complaining about #MeToo on “Flight Path,” or the art-themed “Sex & Rage.” Produced by Party Dozen’s Jonathan Boulet with much energetic forward motion, this impressive debut balances punchy anthems with multi-faceted lyrics, setting the table for even catchier and more personal songwriting on 2023’s bracing Expired Candy.
