Lesley Roy basks in confectionery hooks with a youthful, defiant, grrl-power attitude like many a pop idol to rise to fame in the ‘00s; what separates the Dubliner from the pack is her keen ear for top 40 from before she was born. Into her amiable, assured pop punk, Roy mixes dabs of Bruce Springsteen’s brooding fire, Cyndi Lauper’s synth-pop unusual-ity, and Melissa Etheridge’s growl. In 2008, the singer-songwriter scored a major hit and a signature song with "Unbeautiful," the title song off her sparkling debut LP.
