Before they became one of Canada’s most successful francophone acts of the 2010s, Erik and Sonny Caouette were just two brothers growing up in a closely knit household in northern Quebec. Taking after their musical parents, the brothers formed a duo named Soon et Caou while they were still teenagers. In 2008, the Caouettes relocated closer to the music business in Montreal and began playing in bars and clubs as 2Frères. Their warm vocal harmonies and engaging blend of folk, pop, and heartland rock earned the Caouettes an ally in Quebec music legend Mario Pelchat, who signed them to his MP3 Disques label and facilitated the process that yielded Nous autres, a stirring 2015 debut that was an immediate success. The album’s rootsy title track and the stately, string-laden ballad “M’aimerais-tu pareil?” were early displays of the emotional vulnerability, rustic authenticity, and low-key charm that distinguish the many equally endearing songs on 2017’s La route and 2020’s À tous les vents.
