Describing his music style as “omnitempo maximalism,” DJ and producer Bassnectar integrated numerous styles—everything from dubstep to metal—to become one of the biggest names in electronic music.
• Born Lorin Ashton, Bassnectar spent his early life in a commune near San Jose. His musical journey began in his teens. After learning how to play the guitar, he formed a death metal band called Pale Existence.
• He discovered rave culture in his late teens. By the mid-’90s, he was regularly performing as DJ Lorin, and by the end of the decade, he’d begun releasing mixtapes.
• Experimenting with heavy bass, he began to build a reputation at festivals like Burning Man, where he was a regular throughout the 2000s. By the middle of the decade, he’d become popular enough to tour the country and play 150 shows per year.
• He made his first appearance on the charts when 2009’s Cozza Frenzy peaked just outside the Top 20 on Billboard’s Top Dance/Electronic Albums.
• His 2014 album Noise vs. Beauty became his first of three No. 1 albums on Billboard’s Top Dance/Electronic Albums. The LP also broke through to the pop charts, reaching No. 21 on the Billboard 200.

Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail.
My uncle dug a deep whole in the sand at his favorite beach, fashioned it into a kiln, and made me a ceramic drum skinned by hand. He later taught me how to keep time with complex rhythms by counting aloud and counter-striking on my new drum.
What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far?
Dejavoom 2019, a special destination event in Mexico that, from start to finish, was utterly mind blowing. With a stage right on the beach, the ocean to my left, and thousands of incredible people moving as one, it was totally sublime.
Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band?
My sincere hope is to reflect as much radiant positivity to the world and inspire people toward compassion, kindness, care, and connection. My creativity is very diverse and emotional, centered on helping other human beings lead happier lives.

The ineffable synergy of vocal melodies were raw but intelligent, the beautiful insanity of the lyrics and "catchiness" of every part reminded me of The Beatles and Metallica, two bands who have a nearly 100% success rate with everything they create.
