Formed in Yukon, Oklahoma, in 1994, country-rock band Cross Canadian Ragweed popularized red dirt music—a rowdy regional genre blending rock, jam, and alt-country sounds.
∙ Frontman Cody Canada wrote their breakthrough single, “17”—beloved by fans as a celebration of hometown pride—about the difficulty of growing up in a small town.
∙ In 2004, their album Soul Gravy debuted at No. 5 on Billboard’s Country chart.
∙ “Sick and Tired,” a hit single from Soul Gravy, was the first of several of their songs to feature country music star Lee Ann Womack.
∙ Canada’s grunge rock influences shine through on “Dimebag,” an ode to late Pantera guitarist “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott that earned the band their first spins on rock radio.
∙ The Departed, a red-dirt supergroup formed by Canada and bassist Jeremy Plato, carried on the band’s legacy with three Top 20 Country albums.
