London indie folk-rock quintet Mên an Tol combine traditional folk melodies with the raw and inspiring sounds of '80s and '90s alternative rock. The band is named for an ancient and unusual Cornish standing stone, round with a hole through the middle. Frontman Bill Jefferson grew up in Cornwall and absorbed the rural county's traditional Celtic culture and music; he formed the band shortly after moving to London. Mên an Tol's debut single, "NW1," was released in late 2024 and was an immediate sensation when it was played multiple times on BBC Radio. It was followed by their debut EP, The Country. The band returned in mid-2025 with a new single, "Not Ideal," produced by Carlos O'Connell of Fontaines D.C., which carried echoes of the Smiths and the Cure. It presaged a new EP, This Land, released in September of that year.
