कलाकार की जीवनी
b. Peter Alan Waterman, 15 January 1947, Stoke Heath, Coventry, Warwickshire, England. Producer, DJ and television presenter Waterman has enjoyed a notable career in the UK music industry, from his time with successful production team Stock, Aitken And Waterman to his involvement in reality television shows Pop Idol and Popstars: The Rivals in the new millennium.
Waterman left school without any formal qualifications and his first job was as a boilersmith at the Stafford Road British Railways works in Wolverhampton. He later worked as a gravedigger and an electrician while satisfying his love for R&B and soul music by working part-time as a DJ. In the late 60s he began working as house DJ at the Mecca Group, playing a mixture of soul and mainstream pop. Waterman spent time in America and Jamaica during the early 70s, working with Gamble And Huff and venturing further into the music business as a producer and remixer, with a notable early credit including Susan Cadogan’s 1975 reggae hit ‘Hurts So Good’. During this period he also worked with the Magnet Records and Rocket Records labels in promotion and A&R. In January 1984 Waterman formed writing/production team Stock, Aitken And Waterman with Mike Stock and Matt Aitken. The trio enjoyed major UK success over the next five years with pop artists including Dead Or Alive, Sinitta, Mel And Kim, Rick Astley, Bananarama, Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan and Sonia, although their production line style found little favour with many critics. In 1988 the trio launched their own PWL label. From 1988-92, Waterman co-presented the late night dance show The Hitman And Her with Michaela Strachan. He also presented his own radio show on Liverpool’s Radio City.
After SAW foundered in the early 90s, Waterman stayed involved with the PWL organisation for a few years before re-launching himself as an independent in 1996. His next major breakthrough was the manufactured UK pop group Steps, which enjoyed a string of hit singles between 1998 and 2001. In 2001 and 2002 Waterman appeared as a celebrity judge on the highly successful UK reality television shows Pop Idol and Popstars: The Rivals. Waterman went on to manage the ‘boy’ winners of the latter show, One True Voice, but their career faded rapidly after they were beaten to the 2002 Christmas number 1 slot by the ‘girl’ winners Girls Aloud. Waterman was awarded an OBE for his services to music in the December 2004 New Year’s Honours List. Waterman is also a passionate railway enthusiast, running a rail vehicle maintenance business and a model railway manufacturing company.
