Guitarist and composer Rez Abbasi has an uncommon gift for creating original sounds in settings influenced by traditional forms. Born in Kurachi, Pakistan, and raised in Southern California, Abbasi's recorded catalog reveals comfort with rock, fusion, hard- and post-bop, standards, and traditional music from the Indian subcontinent. On more than a dozen albums, he's led trios, quartets, and quintets while continuing to collaborate with musicians that bring his musical vision to life. 2005's Snake Charmer reflected his organic approach to melding jazz and Indian music, as organ, drums, and guitars supported vocalist Kiran Ahluwalia. His lauded 2009 set, Things to Come, featured a star-studded cast that included contemporaries Ahluwalia, pianist Vijay Iyer, and saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa. 2020 saw the release of Oasis in collaboration with harpist Isabelle Olivier, followed by his own Django-Shift . He released Charm with a quartet in 2023, and the acoustic Sound Remains in 2025.
