Inspired by the work of Roswell Rudd and Bill Watrous, trombonist Steve Swell learned the basics in the big bands of Buddy Rich and Lionel Hampton in the 1970s. Later, 1980s encounters with Herb Robertson and Ken McIntyre drew Swell further into the avant-garde scene, and led to membership in the bands of Phillip Johnston, Tim Berne, and Lou Grassi’s PoBand. The ’00 decade found Swell leading his own groups, taking part in cooperative ensembles, and participating in the Little Huey Creative Music Orchestra.
