Based around the vivid musical imagination of Australian songwriter Richard Davies, the Moles have shaped their gently psychedelic sound into grunge-adjacent rock songs, warped chamber pop, shambling indie pop minimalism, and much more. The band began releasing music in the early '90s with 7"s of upbeat college rock tunes and albums like 1992's Untune the Sky. A series of breakups and reconfigurations took the band on an uncommon path, with Davies focusing on other projects in the decades between the 1994 album Instinct and the Moles' return in 2016 with Tonight's Music. Davies kept the Moles name active, playing live and releasing subsequent new music like the 2025 album Composition Book.
