b. Annika Line Trost, 21 May 1977, Berlin, Germany. At the tender age of 10 Trost gave up her piano practice and started taking drum lessons. Given Berlin’s rich and continued love affair with punk rock, it was not long before she had joined local bands, and for most of her teenage years she played in 60s-inspired garage bands with varying degrees of success. When she reached 20 she decided to trade her drums for a sampler. Mastering the machine very quickly she started to produce some techno-based music, which caught the ear of experimental label Digital Hardcore Recordings. Trost was quickly employed as a support act for two of the label’s signings, Atari Teenage Riot and Shizuo, touring Europe and America in the late 90s.
In 1998 Trost founded the duo Cobra Killer with Gina V. D’Orio of EC8OR, which many critics likened to a female Suicide with two women and a sampler. While continuing to record and tour with Cobra Killer, Trost found the time to release her solo debut in 2002, introducing the world to an altogether more spooky, and eerie sound. Very different to Cobra Killer, although probably having more synergy with her fanbase than first thought, the debut showed great potential. It was not until 2006 that the follow-up, Trust Me, was released on the Four Music Productions label. The album was recorded in Berlin and Australia using musicians from Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds and the Devastations. The result was a haunting, uneasy sound, which would have had Bad Seeds fans smiling in darkened despair and reaching for the repeat button.
