Singer Yo Trane makes modern R&B complete with rap flows, trap beats, and moody, atmospheric soundscapes.
• The singer was born in Gabon, in Central Africa, and grew up in Paris, learning English from American artists. He cites Kanye West’s The College Dropout as one of the albums that made him want to understand the language.
• Yo Trane started out rapping, but after his mother told him the music was “trash,” he realized he should concentrate on singing.
• He made his debut with 2016’s Late Night Drive EP, establishing his style of dark R&B inspired by PARTYNEXTDOOR.
• After a few interim singles, Yo Trane’s returned with 2019’s Waves in the Moonlight, a nine-track collection that includes “Shine Like Beyoncé,” featuring Lil Baby.
