Long Island native Ryan Camenzuli injects sudden structural twists and other surprises into his DIY concoctions as Zuli Jr. Since debuting with 2015’s Supernatural Vodoo EP, he has quickly moved beyond the initial guiding lights of The Shins and Vampire Weekend to establish his own voice. His 2017 album On Human Freakout Mountain boasted harmony-soaked tunes that might turn from delicate balladry to brash rock at a moment’s notice. The 2021 follow-up Stop it God. added more flavors still, with Camenzuli rapping and crooning on “Monolith” and dabbling in snappy neo-soul on “How to Feel.” Now based in Los Angeles, he continues to make Zuli Jr. an outlet for any number of spontaneous genre explorations, all united by his indisputable melodic gifts.
