Budgewoi, a small town on the central east coast of Australia, may not be a world-renowned hotbed of pop-punk talent, but in Short Stack it produced one of Australia’s best exports. Formed in 2005 while each of its members were in their mid-teens, by the time Short Stack split in 2012 the trio was regarded as Australia’s answer to the likes of Fall Out Boy and Panic! At the Disco courtesy of anthems like “We Dance to a Different Disco, Honey” and “Sway Sway Baby!” From early on, the band exhibited a fondness for inserting an electronic twist into their production (“Shimmy a Go Go”), something that continued all the way through to “Bang Bang Sexy” from their Art Vandelay album, released shortly after their 2012 split. A brief reunion in 2014 yielded the confident, more mature album Homecoming and singles like “Amy,” but by 2015 the band was no more—until, that is, they reunited again in 2020.
