Originally part of Nine Inch Nails' touring lineup, guitarist Richard Patrick formed Cleveland's Filter in 1993 with a focus on industrial rock and alternative metal. Two years later, the group's intense debut album, Short Bus, went platinum and sent them globetrotting for several years, though 1999's fellow million-seller Title of Record took a more palatable pop-meets-alt-rock approach. The band went on hiatus a few years later, but a 2008 relaunch with a rotating cast of players revived their prolific recording and touring pattern.
