When The Jungle Giants first appeared in 2011, the Brisbane quartet loaded their bright-eyed indie rock with invigorating sing-along choruses. That melodic reliability foreshadowed the band’s eventual shift to a more commercial sound. The scrappy jangle of 2012’s “She’s a Riot” soon gave way to the disco percolations of 2017’s “Feel the Way I Do” and the skittering hook and rubbery bassline of the following year’s “Used to Be in Love.” A celebratory atmosphere comes naturally to lead vocalist Sam Hales: He fully commits to the confetti-ready falsetto chorus of 2020’s “Sending Me Ur Loving,” which came in at No. 8 on triple j’s Hottest 100.
Hales produced and wrote all the songs on the 2021 album Love Signs, accelerating the forward momentum that has always been a Jungle Giants trademark. And after commissioning assorted remixes and cozying up to other electronic elements, the band plunged directly into dance pop on 2025’s lush “Hold My Hand.” When Hales repeats the title refrain as an open-hearted appeal before launching into the song’s satisfying finale, he proves that his hooky songwriting can flourish in any form.
