Sault, “Up All Night” “I listen to Sault a lot on set, and certainly in Seasons 1 and 2 of Surface. ‘Up All Night’ is a great song we used on set with Millie Brady, with our characters Sophie/Tess and Eliza at the Huntley House, dancing in the ballroom. I think on the show, they used a different track in the mix, but the song always reminds me of bopping around a ballroom with Millie. It was also a night shoot, so we were actually ‘Up All Night!’” Jungle, “Back on 74 (Full Crate Remix)” “I love all of Jungle’s tracks, but ‘Back on 74,’ particularly this Full Crate Remix, I enjoyed listening to in the trailer, especially with Oliver Jackson-Cohen. It’s a track that we enjoy, and I love the energy of it, and this remix is a little bit more chill than some of the more amped Jungle tracks.” Ólafur Arnalds, “Saudade (When We Are Born)” “I’ve been listening to Ólafur ever since we were filming Season 1, and I love the soulful energy of his tracks. I love ‘Saudade’ for its sparse piano. It’s a very intimate, emotional track that I associate with Sophie’s journey with her mother, trying to find a connection to this woman that she doesn’t know in her life anymore and trying to connect to the emotional energy of that.” Ólafur Arnalds & Bonobo, “Loom” “I saw Ólafur play this live when he came to London in Hammersmith a couple of years ago on his Some Kind of Peace Tour. I just love this track for its rhythm, and I think it works on your subconscious; it builds, but it’s subtle.” Nouvelle Vague, “In a Manner of Speaking” (feat. Camille) “I love to play this song in the trailer. It has that sophisticated, French, romantic energy to it. It feels like a good tempo for the good times of Sophie and James, the romantic times and the elegance of the world they live in, even though there’s lots of dark secrets underneath, which the song has too.”
