Orange County natives Social Distortion helped kickstart the Southern California punk/hardcore movement, though they never really fit into it. Formed in '78, their early sound owed a lot to U.K. punk and early Rolling Stones but they soon embraced blues, country, and rockabilly, and were big fans of Johnny Cash and Hank Williams. The roots-punk band hit big on back-to-back albums in the early '90s, spawning a legion of fans and imitators. Despite numerous line-up changes, Social Distortion have sold more than three million albums and steadfastly continue to tour and influence younger bands.
