Multi-hyphenate Vanessa Williams had already won the Miss America Pageant by the time her debut album, The Right Stuff, dropped in 1988. Being a household name didn't hurt sales, nor did her exceptional beauty, but her genuinely lovely voice was the factor that pushed the album over the top. Her follow-up, 1991's The Comfort Zone, was a triple-platinum blockbuster, riding a handful of smash singles.
