At the dawn of the ’60s, many of the most popular hitmakers were concentrated in a single 11-story Manhattan base that housed singers, songwriters, publishers, and promoters. A once-in-a-lifetime coalescence of dreamy doo-wop, shuffling R&B, and snappy girl-group pop, the Brill Building’s musical output changed the world forever. Iconic writer/composers who got their start there include Burt Bacharach and Hal David, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, and future solo stars Neil Diamond and Carole King. The resulting “Brill Building sound” lives on in a euphoric swell of handclaps and harmonies, a giddy time capsule of pop’s coming of age.
