Although he led great orchestras between the ‘50s and ‘80s, Gil Evans made his greatest impact as an arranger. He provided silky, sophisticated, agile platforms for dynamic soloists like Miles Davis and created simpatico settings for the Andalusian splendor of “Concierto de Aranjuez (Adagio)” and the humid ambience of “Summertime.” He also translated the bossa nova of Astrud Gilberto's “Berimbau” for American ears.
