Desmond and the Tutus are as well known for their unique style of indie rock and outlandish onstage antics as their left-field name. With their debut album Tuckshop, The Tutus burst onto a 2008 scene more concerned with mainstream rock, but they found a home on MK89 with an audience of discerning listeners. Rooted in strong kwela melodies and a DIY indie-punk attitude, frontman Shane Durrant along with his brother Craig on drums and guitarist Douglas Bower spearheaded a new wave of underground bands. They scooped up a SAMA for Best Rock Album in 2018 and took their spectacle of a live show global—journeying from Oppikoppi to Osaka, Japan.
