Contemporary metalcore bands are often far more willing to experiment than people realise. Take While She Sleeps, a Sheffield quintet, together since 2006, that have spent their career transcending hard rock’s narrow expectations. Early on, the band paired metalcore’s familiar signifiers—pummelling blast beats and thundering metal riffage—with screamo’s hoarse vocals and precise dynamics. As they’ve progressed, however, While She Sleeps have forged new ways of conveying aggression—via hardcore’s brutal speed, punk’s rebellious energy and Linkin Park-esque electronic flourishes and grooves.
