Brazilian rockers Scalene exist in a universe of extremes—guitars are either cranked all the way up or unplugged and gently strummed. One of the band's biggest cuts is "Amanheceu", a stunning, acoustic folk ballad with ghostly background vocals, while "Nunca Apague a Luz" is a stirring piano epic. Largely, though, Scalene chug away at the other end of the spectrum, blasting out of speakers with sludgy guitar blowouts and pounding heavy metal percussion. The band have intently explored all these corners since forming in 2009, and 2017's Magnetite was among their most gripping work yet.
