Appearing on the country charts in four different decades and on his own TV variety show for two, Porter Wagoner spent much of his life as a pillar of Music Row. He’s often remembered now as the person who introduced the world to Dolly Parton, both on his show and through more than a dozen successful duet albums; Wagoner, though, was prolific all on his own. Though he wrote original songs, Wagoner is best known for the now-standards that he popularized. One of the first was “A Satisfied Mind,” a timeless, gospel-inflected rebuke of wealth that Wagoner brought to the top of the country charts in 1955; “Green, Green Grass of Home” and “Misery Loves Company” are also among the Wagoner hits that became beloved country classics.
