Nothing is sacred for Buddy Goode, the politically incorrect musical comedy persona of Australia’s Michael Carr. That includes off-color accounts of musical hijinks (“She Sucks, I Blow” is actually about a harmonica) and lamenting the inevitable shift of cultural winds (“Gay”). Despite brandishing an American accent and country twang, this character is steeped in exaggerated Aussie culture. Goode salutes both rugby league football (“Up There Hopoate (The NRL Grand Final Song)”) and patriotic holidays (“Happy Birthday Australia (The Australia Day Song)”), all while showcasing his cluelessness as an overconfident outsider. He’s especially fond of seemingly accidental wordplay, as heard on “Dickens Cider” and “Back in the Bush,” and there’s plenty of space left to poke fun at anything and everything else. He even makes room for yuletide cheer with “Carol’s,” which isn’t about what you might think. Carr carefully engineers Buddy Goode as a brassy, outsized presence armed with unwitting punchlines, winning him two ARIA Awards in the process.
