Afrobeats Hits
Playlist - 100 Songs
Born in Nigeria and Ghana, Afrobeats has become one of the most eclectic—and exportable—sounds in contemporary music, often incorporating everything from rap and dancehall to R&B and house. At the top of the playlist this week is SPINALL’s “STRUGGLE,” a track from the Lagos-hailing DJ and producer’s recently released ÈKÓ GROOVE—with a backstory that makes the song that much more fun to listen to. “I went to Jamaica on what was supposed to be a vacation,” SPINALL says. “It ended up becoming a full-on studio session. Buju Banton is a legend and an icon. He’s someone who has stood for the truth and always lends his voice when it comes to speaking for people who have been through stuff. During the session, we were talking about things that are wrong with the world, and that was how this song was given birth to.” SPINALL didn’t stop with the reggae and dancehall superstar on his list of collaborators. “Then I reached out to Jaz Karis—I was thinking an R&B voice mixed with Buju Banton’s raw vocals would be insane,” he says. “I wanted to get as many people from different parts of the world to talk about struggle. Summer Walker came to mind. We have a Jamaican on the record, we have a Nigerian on the record, we have somebody from the UK on the record, and we have someone from the US on the record. I think it’s a smash.” Hear “STRUGGLE” on Afrobeats Hits, alongside the rest of the infectious if indefinable sound of 21st-century Africa.
