Always ready to tell it like it is, Jasmine Rae is an unflinching—and often quite funny—voice in Australian country music. “You need boots to wade through all the bull you tell me when you come home drunk,” she sings on 2008’s “Look It Up,” the title track of her ARIA-nominated debut album. That pointed farewell to an unfaithful lover is far from an outlier in the Melbourne singer-songwriter’s catalog. Set to hooky rock motifs, the 2011 single “I Faked It” is another joyful takedown of a man who’s finally on his way out the door, while 2013’s “Bad Boys Get Me Good” enlists guest Kellie Pickler for a bluesy romp through Rae’s rogues’ gallery of exes. Her vocal swagger reaches stormy new heights on 2015’s “Everybody Wants to Take My Money,” as Rae once again doesn’t mince words when airing her grievances. Yet, the sharp-eyed lyricist can also turn her attention inwards, questioning her every decision in the thick of anxiety on the 2020 pop-country single “Green Light.” Even when sharing her own hurtful inner dialogue, Rae doesn’t sand down the rough edges of emotional turmoil.
