Pete Townshend's solo work is often a warmer and more thoughtful companion to The Who's immaculately conceived rage-rock. “Slit Skirts” and “Give Blood” revel in their own kinetic power, racking sharp guitars against saturated synths, piano stabs, and pillows of harmonies. His romantic writing skills remain sharp on the early ‘80s synth-pop of “Let My Love Open the Door” and “Rough Boys,” a careening rush into wild and dangerous nights. And “Face the Face” and “English Boy” are the sound of a conceptual artist who happens to express himself best in sterling rock songs.
