The band Tonic isn’t Jeff Russo’s only gig—the rocker has evolved into a composer of television and film scores. His Emmy Award-winning work on the Fargo series put him on the map in 2014: displaying an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink approach, Russo fuses classical with rock and folk with gospel, all the while maintaining the series’ heartland darkness. Subsequent projects include Star Trek: Discovery (for which he reinvents the franchise’s classic orchestration) and an urgent, strings-saturated score for The Umbrella Academy that heightens the series’ strange tension.
