Adam Harvey is a born storyteller—and a respectful interpreter of other songwriters’ tales, too. After graduating from truck driving to country singing, the Geelong native carved out a trusty lane for himself with breezy yet nuanced narratives that continued the genre’s clean-cut musical traditions. Observe 2001’s “The House That Jack Built,” which riffs on the classic nursery rhyme while spinning a fresh yarn about love gone wrong. Yet, he’s got a rascally streak, as heard on such good-humored drinking songs as 2007’s bourbon-soaked “Genie in the Bottle.” Harvey has been careful not to repeat himself, adopting playful concepts ranging from duets and covers albums to home-recorded hoedowns and Nashville sojourns. Like any great songwriter, Harvey can collapse decades’ worth of lived experience into just a few minutes of a cracking tune: Note his graceful handling of passing time on 2021’s “Lindeman Again.” And similarly, on 2024’s “Let the Song Take You Home,” he gazes nostalgically back upon some of the music that shaped his most formative years, including Slim Dusty and Brooks & Dunn.
