Formed in Illinois in the late 2000s, Oceano is one of deathcore’s most gargantuan-sounding bands. Growler Adam Warren doesn’t even sound human—more like a demonic beast summoned from a Lovecraftian nether realm. Meanwhile, guitars unleash suffocating murkiness, and breakdowns swirl with all the gravitational pull of black holes. Oceano’s aptly titled 2009 debut, Depths, reveals a formative grindcore influence. But on 2010’s Contagion and 2013’s Incisions, the group locks into a deft balance of harshly technical arrangements and despairing atmospherics topped off with the occasional blast of industrial pummel. After a seven-year hiatus, a revamped Oceano returned to action with 2024’s Living Chaos, an album flirting with melody and electronics yet still rooted in jarring heaviness.
