Grey Girl

There is a house high on a hill

With a roaring river below

Like the pie cooling on its sill

She longs to fall from the window

High on a mountain she did climb

Cracked her crown on the decline

Lost in lofty tongue and rhyme

A princess from another time

She speaks to herself as she skitters about

In the back of the furnace with the lights turned out

One man's treasure is another man's trove

She makes her home in my stove

The grass is like silk beneath her feet

As she slides through riparian sleet

Unknowing the end she could meet

The water is so cold and sweet

I hear her voice in a silver heirloom

Hiding in her coal heated cast iron womb

She finds comfort in the darkness of day

Oh grey girl, I want you to stay
