Brendan Benson is yet another amazing talent who can re-create the atmosphere of whatever era of pop music he’s feeling at the moment. The Detroit-to-Nashville musician released a steady stream of six new tunes during 2013 and decided to end the year by collecting those songs and other unreleased tracks to make the formidable You Were Right. Like previous Benson albums, plenty of ‘70s pop influences (from Jeff Lynne’s ELO to Badfinger to Wings and The Eagles) soak through the arrangements to meet with the songwriting values of The Beatles, The Kinks, and The Zombies. The joy driving “Purely Automatic” or the playful horn arrangement chasing the poor narrator of “She’s Trying to Poison Me” and “I Don’t Wanna See You Anymore” or the pretty, hastily strummed chords of “Oh My Love” and the absurd vaudeville shuffle of “Swallow You Whole” create an album that simply loves the musical traditions it stems from. Benson is a studio master.
