Album · Pop · 2010
Even in his late 60s, Tom Jones isn’t slowing down. Where other elder statesmen opt for stripped down arrangements and at times mournful contemplations of death, Jones kicks up the horns and sets out for the dancefloor without a single moment of doubt. Even when he recounts his moral failures to his wife on “The Road,” it’s still with his cheeky flamboyant voice channeling past the strong, funky beat. The title track is the closest Jones comes to meeting the silence, as it recounts a death row inmate’s last moments. More typical is the defiant mirth of his Tommy James & The Shondells cover, “I’m Alive.” U2’s Bono penned “Sugar Daddy” with Jones and his sex symbol legend in mind and well acknowledged. Bruce Springsteen’s “The Hitter” may be about an elder boxer who can’t stay out of the ring, but it could just as easily be about a singer who can’t leave the stage, except Jones doesn’t sound over the hill, but shockingly capable, with a theatricality missing in many of today’s singers.
