Entomology
Album · Rock · 2006
Scottish postpunks Josef K made choppy versions of jangle pop and dance rock, sometimes doomy, sometimes frantic. Little heard in America during their early-’80s heyday – the compilation Entomology is their first-ever U.S. album – they nonetheless commanded a small stateside following. Often borrowing the stately drone of Joy Division (“Sense of Guilt,” a tale of displacement that substitutes tortured shouts for a final verse) or the sprightly bounce of Postcard Records contemporaries Orange Juice (the witty “Sorry for Laughing,” which sends these regrets: “I’d help you if I could, but both my arms are made of wood”). This album collects 22 tracks from various singles, then-unreleased album sessions, a completed and issued LP and the group’s last Peel Session before their split.
